American Odds vs. Decimal Odds vs. Fractional Odds

blackjack online sportsbooks up no up

Every sportsbook displays odds in one of three formats. NJ sportsbooks default to American odds, but knowing all three helps you compare value and understand any source you’re reading.

American Odds

Shown as a positive or negative number. A negative number (like -150) shows how much you must bet to win $100. A positive number (like +130) shows how much you’d win on a $100 bet.

Decimal Odds

Common internationally, decimal odds show your total return per $1 wagered, including your original stake. Odds of 2.50 mean a $10 bet returns $25 total.

Fractional Odds

Common in the UK, shown as a fraction like 5/2 — meaning you win $5 for every $2 wagered, plus your stake back.

Why It Matters

All three formats express the exact same underlying probability — learning to convert between them lets you compare lines across different apps and international sources without confusion.
