Texas Hold’em is the most widely played poker variant in the world, and the format behind most casino poker rooms and televised tournaments. The rules are simple enough to learn in minutes, even though mastering strategy takes far longer.
The Basic Flow
Each player is dealt two private “hole” cards. A round of betting follows, then three shared community cards (the “flop”) are dealt, followed by a betting round, then a fourth card (the “turn”), another betting round, a fifth card (the “river”), and a final betting round. Players make the best five-card hand from their two hole cards plus the five community cards.
Betting Structure
Most games use a small blind and big blind — forced bets from the two players left of the dealer — to seed the pot before cards are even dealt. Betting then proceeds clockwise, with options to check, bet, call, raise, or fold at each stage.
